5 Road Trip Essentials

My first official Adventure blog!

In the summer of 2016 my brother Peter, my cousin Spencer, and I set out on a 5 week road trip that went from coast to coast. We stopped at 9 different national parks, and many major cities and attractions. Luckily I did my homework and figured out exactly what we needed to survive 5 weeks in a car together. These are the 5 I deemed most important.

1. A Cooler

When you are on a road trip you are obviously going to want snacks. With a cooler we were able to upgrade all of our snacks, and it wasn’t just any cooler, it was a A Coleman 40 Quart Powerchill Thermoelectric Cooler. Instead of settling for chips and slim jims this allowed us to have leftover pizza from Chicago and keep ham and turkey in there for some sandwiches. We were basically eating like kings in terms of road trip food. Not to mention we never had a warm drink again, we always kept a bunch of water bottles in there, easily accessible. Our cooler was always jammed packed with goodies and leftovers and definitely enhanced our road trip experience.

2. A Power Adapter

Today, everyone lives on their phones, and always has to check it every minute. With three of us in a 2007 dodge pick up and one working power outlet, a power adapter with multiple plugins was a necessity. We were all able to charge our phones at the same time, and still have room to plugin anything else we needed. To me this can even count as a safety measure, because when we drove through Wyoming on our way to Denver, it was a 100+ mile road with nothing on either side and no pit stops. So if we broke down we would at least have a charged phone to call for help. Luckily that didn’t happen and we just used our phones to scroll through social media.

3.GPS

This may seem like an obsolete device because we all have google maps on our phones, but this can save you a lot of money. On the road we used my phone for navigation, and my data bill went through the roof. Using maps on your phone  requires a lot of data and battery. My phone had to always be on the charger when navigating to the next stop. A GPS also can be placed better, and in a easily visible place. Every so often I had to take my eyes off the road to look down at my phone to see when my next turn was vs looking slightly one way at a GPS mounted on the window. A GPS makes navigating easier and safer. I highly recommend getting one for your next trip.

4. Garbage bags

Being on the road for weeks at a time, your vehicle becomes a bit messy with bottles, fast food bags, and candy wrappers all over the floor and in the seat cracks. Unless you like living that way I recommend that you get some trash bags so all the garbage is in one spot, and your car doesn’t look like a landfill. You will feel a lot cleaner when and a clean car makes for a better ride.

5. Roadside Emergency Kit

Regardless of if you are taking a road trip of not, everyone should have a roadside kit with jumper cables, flashlight, tow strap, and other safety gear. You never know what could happen on the road so it is important to always prepare for the worst. Roadside kits can be quite handy when disaster strikes, and can walk you through what do to fix the problem, or what to do until help arrives.

These five items will enhance your road trip experience greatly. I am about to drive from Florida to New York in a few weeks and will definitely be using these.

If you are on the fence about taking a road trip, do it! I promise you will have no regrets. Get out there an experience life and see the world!

I would also like to thank my parents for making the trip possible.
